The hotel

Built in 1834, and run as a hotel since 1952

The Nithbank was built for a Dumfries corn merchant who wanted the best view of the river and got it. It has taken guests for more than seventy years, and was restored between 2019 and 2021 with the plasterwork, the staircase and the garden walls kept as they were.

Twenty-four rooms across three floors, a lift to all of them, and a dining room that holds two AA rosettes. We are a five-minute walk from the town centre and ten minutes from the station, with parking for forty cars behind the building.

Rooms & suites

Six room types — drag, swipe or use the arrows

Classic Double — a double or twin on the second and third floors, most looking over the walled garden. Twelve of them, and the best value in the building.

Every room has air conditioning, a Nespresso machine, and a bath as well as a shower. Tap any photograph to open it full screen.

The Bramble Room

Two rosettes, and a menu that changes weekly

Our kitchen works with producers within forty miles: beef from Kirkcudbrightshire, langoustines landed at Kirkcudbright that morning, and vegetables from three growers in the Nith valley.

Dinner is served from six until nine, seven days a week. Non-residents are welcome and we would recommend booking at weekends.

The bathhouse

A pool and a sauna in the old stable block

The stables behind the walled garden were converted in 2021 into a small bathhouse: a fourteen-metre pool, a Finnish sauna, a steam room and a gym.

Use is included for every resident, and there is no charge and no need to book. Guests under sixteen are welcome in the pool until seven in the evening.

Weddings & events

Four event rooms, and the garden when the weather allows

We hold a civil ceremony licence and take one wedding a day, so the hotel is yours from the morning. Exclusive use of all twenty-four bedrooms is available from November to March.

The same four rooms take conferences, board meetings, funeral teas and private dinners through the week. Our events manager handles every enquiry personally and will walk you round the building whenever suits, including evenings.

Klarna Pay in 3, no cost to you

Most couples pay in three stages and never need anything else. For larger parties we also accept Klarna Pay in 3 on the balance, which splits it into three interest-free instalments with no fee and no effect on what you pay us. Klarna will run an affordability check, as they are now required to.

The region

Dumfries & Galloway

Robert Burns spent his last years in Dumfries and is buried five minutes from our front door. Beyond the town there is a great deal more, and rather fewer people than you might expect.

Caerlaverock Castle

The moated triangular keep at Caerlaverock

20 minutes

A moated triangular castle on the Solway, unusual in Britain and unusually complete. The wetlands centre next to it takes twenty thousand barnacle geese each winter.

Devorgilla Bridge

The medieval bridge over the River Nith

6 minutes on foot

One of the oldest standing bridges in Scotland, six arches across the Nith. The Burns House and the Globe Inn are both a short walk from the far side.

Drumlanrig Castle

The pink sandstone frontage of Drumlanrig Castle

35 minutes

Pink sandstone, a Rembrandt on the wall and forty miles of mountain bike trails in the estate below it. We can arrange tickets at the desk.

Sweetheart Abbey

The red sandstone ruins of Sweetheart Abbey

15 minutes

Red sandstone ruins founded in 1273 by Lady Devorgilla, who is buried there with her husband's heart. The village around it is worth an hour on its own.

The front desk had our room ready at eleven because the train got in early. Nobody made a fuss about it; it was simply done.
Business guest — March
We compared the rate here against three booking sites. This was the lowest, and it included breakfast that the others did not.
Weekend guest — August
Held our wedding in the ballroom for ninety. The events manager answered every email within the hour for eleven months.
